At the crest of the Eastside, ”convenient to the Scientology Center” is Square One, an odd location for a quaint, unpretentious daytime mecca. Breakfast thru lunch is prepared with as many local and seasonal ingredients as they can muster. They have a daily changing chalkboard highlighting their vendors and home baked goodies. My favorite baked treat is their homemade English muffins, they make the best breakfast sandwiches ever not to mention the Benedicts! They also offer daily muffins which are usually the first item to run out on a weekend and are highlighted with the homemade jams and jellies. Nueskes bacon is served extra thick and perfectly chewy fatty and cooked thru to satisfy every bacon aficionado. Even my vegetarian friends cannot help but to have at least a nibble!
Their menu varies from French toast and pancakes served with an eclectic variety of toppings like citrus or bacon caramel to pecans and vanilla whipped cream. Then comes the classics with slight twists and upgrades ranging from benedicts, egg sandwiches, baked egg dishes and steak and eggs offered with the only grits I’d eat on the west coast. Basics are offered as well as if their steel cut oats were basic or even their fruit plate which is always the freshest array of the season’s choices.
Lunch is just as impressive offering daily homemade soups, amazing sandwiches like the house cures salmon sandwich, Harris Ranch burgers, and a poached egg salad with Nueskes lardons, and roasted potatoes that will make any Monday the best day of the week. OH and I almost forgot the cobb salad! Humbolt Fog instead of blue, buttermilk dressing ….and of course Nueskes.
Surprisingly Square One’s price points are from $5 to $14. This is an absolute must for LA visitors and Angelinos alike! My friends in LA still call each time they go just to rub it in.
